Bio
Dr. Bown is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, specializing in nonprofit communication, experiential learning, intercultural issues, and interpersonal conflict. She earned a BA in Communication and Journalism from Universidad de Chile, a Master's in Education from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, and a PhD in Organizational Leadership from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.

Female Leadership under the Andean CosmovisionNovember, 26 201810th Annual conference ALASRU (Asociacion Latinoamericana de Sociologia Rural), Montevideo, UruguaySi bien el origen del concepto de sumak kawsay del mundo andino, traducido como buen vivir, se remonta a la época precolombina, fue recién en este milenio que pasó a formar parte del discurso oficial del Ecuador. Hoy en dÃa, activistas, lÃderes indÃgenas y autoridades gubernamentales rescatan este principio andino para incorporarlo a la definición del Ecuador como una nación multiétnica y pluricultural. (En efecto, el sumak kawsay ha sido incluido en el ArtÃculo 1 de la Constitución de la República del Ecuador del 2008). A grandes rasgos, sumak kawsay es un modelo de vida que promueve el bienestar de los individuos y las comunidades, en armonÃa con la naturaleza y con responsabilidad social. El propósito de este estudio de casos es examinar cómo el sumak kawsay, a modo de alternativa a la forma dominante de pensar la sociedad y la ruralidad, sirve de guÃa para las lideresas rurales indÃgenas dentro de sus pueblos originarios. Además de una revisión exhaustiva de estudios académicos anteriores, este trabajo contiene datos empÃricos provenientes de mis observaciones de campo, análisis de documentos y entrevistas semiestructuradas con 19 lideresas procedentes de ocho pueblos Kichwa de la sierra del Ecuador. Los datos empÃricos fueron codificados con el programa computacional cualitativo ATLAS.ti (Version 7) y revisados siguiendo los pasos del análisis temático de Boyatzis (1998). Un hallazgo importante de este trabajo es que el principio andino del sumak kawsay continúa influenciando el liderazgo femenino en las zonas andinas rurales en pleno siglo XXI. Asà es como se explica que cuando estas mujeres lideran en organizaciones de base de sus pueblos originarios, ellas empoderan dualmente: tanto en el lugar de trabajo como en la vida privada de sus seguidores. Este paper finaliza con recomendaciones de polÃtica pública para los legisladores y dirigentes de organizaciones no gubernamentales que deseen apoyar a los individuos de comunidades rurales andinas.

Dr. Bown is the director of Internships for the Department of Communication; the campus coordinator of the Nonprofit Leadership Minor and the the nonprofit certification program from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance; and is one of the founding members of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥'s Women's Forum.
