Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (SU) values its employees and recognizes the challenges of balancing work and personal responsibilities—especially when those responsibilities involve an employee’s own health or the care of family members.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the University System of Maryland (USM) will implement a new Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program. This benefit provides eligible employees with paid, job-protected leave for qualifying family, medical, and certain military-related reasons.
The PFML program was established under Maryland law and applies to Executive Branch employees, including those within USM. It is important to note that this USM-administered PFML program is separate from the State’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program, which is currently scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2028.
USM employees are not covered by the State’s FAMLI insurance program. PFML benefits will continue to be administered directly by USM.
Where applicable, PFML and FMLA will be used concurrently.
